Limited English Proficient Population in New York City

With more than 3 million foreign-born residents from more than 200 different countries, New York is home to one of the most diverse populations in the world. New Yorkers come from every corner of the globe and speak over 200 different languages.

Nearly one-half of all New Yorkers speak a language other than English at home, and almost 25%, or 1.8 million persons, are not English Proficient. For these New Yorkers, interacting with City Government can often be a challenge. In February 2017, City Council passed Local Law 30, which required all City agencies to provide opportunities for Limited English speakers to communicate and receive services; therefore, the Special Narcotics Prosecutor ’s office provides free interpretation services for constituents and other visitors as requested.

The Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP) will always strive to ensure that language is not a barrier to the services we provide by having information on the SNP’s website available in all languages by clicking the blue “English” tab at the bottom right-hand corner of the website. Questions or Complaints: If you have any questions or would like to file a complaint at any time, please contact SNP’s Language Access Coordinator, Thomas G. Van Noy at disabilityservices@snp.nyc.gov.

SNP is in the process of developing a Language Access Implementation Plan in accordance with Local Law 30 of 2017.

    Five-Year Accessibility Plan

SNP is in the process of developing a Five-Year Accessibility Plan in accordance with Local Law 12 of 2023.
