Property Release Request

Civilian property may be confiscated and secured by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) in an investigation or criminal prosecution overseen by the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor (SNP).  When this happens, you will receive a NYPD property voucher form at the time of arrest or investigatory action.  If the voucher indicates “Arrest Evidence,” “Forfeiture,” or “Investigatory,” the first step required to recover your property, is obtaining a release in the form of a letter from SNP, stating that it no longer needs to maintain the vouchered property. You do not need a release from SNP for other categories that may be listed on the voucher form.

Note: If you are a proxy/third party requesting the release of property on behalf of another, you must submit a notarized authorizing letter from the owner (including individuals who have been arrested).

A release letter from SNP indicates the office has no reason to require continued safeguarding of the property. Such letter is not a statement that you or anyone else have any possessory right to the property vouchered and does not guarantee the release of the property from the NYPD or other enforcement agency. Please use the form below to make a request to SNP’s Property Release Unit.
